The thief left it behind –
the moon
at the window

This is probably hermit-monk Ryokan’s most famous haiku.
He had returned home to his humble hermitage to find a thief had visited and stolen his few possessions.
But the moon!  It hung in the window, impervious to theft.  Poor thief!
