Thank you for your comment @indjagar. The drawing was indeed from a butterfly wing study, and the shape of the piece of washi matched up with it beautifully – one of those little studio serendipities!

Japanese handmade paper is called ‘washi’. These little wing shapes were probably made to hold haiku or sumie paintings …
